Welimada Central College, also known as WCC, is a public educational institution in Sri Lanka, with a rich history dating back to July 1, 1945. Originally named Labutota Vidyalaya, the school started in a traditional cadjan thatched hall. The land for the school was generously donated by Colonel Alex Divitotawela. In 1947, plans were made for the construction of the main building, which included two hostels for both girls and boys.
The school initially offered education in English and Tamil mediums. However, in 1960, all subjects were taught in the vernacular language. One of the highlights of WCC’s achievements is that it produced the first student from the Uva province to be selected for university, Mr. U.B. Wijekoon.
